2016 US PGA Championship: Can we see yet another first-time major winner?

Garcia is among those looking to break his major duck

Only twice since 1970 have there been four first-time major winners. In 2003, it was Mike Weir, Jim Furyk, Ben Curtis and Shaun Micheel. In 2011, it was Charl Schwartzel, Rory McIlroy, Darren Clarke and Keegan Bradley who would win their first, with Rory eventually winning three more majors.

This year, Henrik Stenson and Dustin Johnson were both deservedly knocked off the list of ‘best-players-without-a-major’. That leaves usual suspects such as Sergio Garcia, Lee Westwood and Rickie Fowler, hoping to make it a unique year. Garcia has had 22 top 10s, 12 top 5s in majors. Westwood has had 18 top 10s, 11 top 5s. Fowler has had 6 top 10s, 5 top 5s which pales in comparison but is only 27 and he desperately needs a major to live up to his hype.

Or what about our own Shane Lowry, who will be looking to rebound from a crushing loss from a four-shot 54-hole lead at the US Open in June.

Last year, Jason Day broke his major duck at the US PGA. Can we see another long-awaited major champion this week?
