Rory McIlroy’s withdrawal from the Turkish Airlines Open this week has all but ended his chances of winning the season-ending Race to Dubai title. But the Northern Irishman has no regrets about his decision about the event being held in the region of Antalya, which was attacked by rockets from terrorist groups earlier this month.
While McIlroy had a good week in China, finishing in a tie for 4th place, it was an even better week of Open champion Henrik Stenson, whose crucial birdie at the 72nd hole put him one shot ahead of McIlroy in tied 2nd place and more importantly gave him 375,892 more points in the Race to Dubai standings.
It means that McIlroy, who is not scheduled to play again until the final event in Dubai, is now over 1 million points behind Stenson, with only 1.2 million points for the winner of the final event. With Stenson taking in one more event than McIlroy, it seems like only Danny Willett, 261,387 points behind, can now prevent the Swede from winning a second Race to Dubai title.
