World No 1 in March 2016, Jordan Spieth has slipped down to sixth in the Official World Golf Rankings. However, with his dominant win in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am tournament, he is again not too far off the top spot occupied by Jason Day.
Day did not do his ranking any harm by finishing tied fifth at Pebble Beach, but only a 1.4 average separates the Aussie and Spieth in the rankings. The golfers in between are Rory McIlroy (2), Dustin Johnson (3), Henrik Stenson (4), Hideki Matsuyama (5). The gap between Spieth in sixth and Adam Scott in seventh is almost three whole points.
In 2001, Tiger Woods held an amazing 19.40 average lead over then world number two Phil Mickelson. Today’s logjam at the top of the rankings reflects the parity at the top of men’s golf. Any of the six could snatch top spot over the coming weeks and head into the Masters as top dog. It is Dustin Johnson will have the first opportunity. He will become golf’s twentieth World No 1 golfer with a win at Riviera next week.
