The American is the 20th player to reach the top of the Official World Golf Rankings

It is hard not to admire how dedicated Dustin Johnson has been to his game since 2014, and he got his just rewards with the World No 1 ranking after his five-shot victory at Riviera on the PGA Tour.

It comes only two and a half years on from when Johnson took a six month break from the game, pushed or otherwise, citing personal problems. He said in an interview it was due to alcohol abuse, although Golf.com reported that he had tested positive for cocaine.

The birth of his first child, Tatum, seems to have matured Johnson, who has always had an incredible raw ability for golf with superlative driving – long and straight – and nice feel around the greens. Since his break from the game, he won his first major title at last year’s US Open, and won three more PGA Tour titles.

One example of how Johnson has transformed his game over the past few seasons is his wedge game. Johnson went from 80th in 2014 to 4th in 2016 in shots from 50-125 yards. With DJ’s length off the tee, that’s frightening for his opponents.
