The weird and wonderful adventures of Phil Mickelson

While Dustin Johnson won his second tournament in a row and cemented his place as World No 1, Phil Mickelson left the most memorable impression on what was an exciting week in Mexico for the World Golf Championship.

The American, known as ‘Phil the Thrill’, has never been a great driver of the ball but even by his standards he was exceptionally wayward on Saturday at the tight, tree-lined Club de Golf Chapultepec course.

Hitting only four fairways in his round, Mickelson found himself in bushes and trees on seemingly every hole. He had three rules consultations, which included controversial free drops for a sprinkler head in a bush impeding his stance and for a spectator picking up his ball after missing the fairway by about 50 yards.

Yet despite his troubles, he had six birdies en route to a 68, with two of them chip-ins.

There’s only one Phil Mickelson, who stands with Seve as one of the greatest recovery players in the game’s history.
