It ended in disappointment– a three-putt from 25 putt on the 72nd hole – but overall Rory McIlroy was happy with a 65-69 weekend finish to finish tied for 4th at the Arnold Palmer Invitaional at Bay Hill.

Eleven shots back on Friday, it was quite an achievement to hold a tie for the lead at some point on Sunday.

McIlroy had 14 birdies in Florida as he played attacking, fearless golf at the weekend, hitting several drives over 350 yards, with one notable drive cutting the corner at the 15th hole.

In what was a special week on the PGA Tour as the first Arnold Palmer Invitational without The King, McIlroy in his own words ‘tried to play like AP would’ve wanted me to down the stretch’.

Palmer won 62 PGA Tour events and 7 majors, but he also lost a lot more.

“Arnold was majestic at winning and losing,” once said commentator Peter Alliss. McIlroy on Sunday was magnificent in defeat and another win is surely only around the corner.
