
It was a third consecutive victory for Dustin Johnson at the WGC-Dell Matchplay as the American underlined why he’s heavy favourite heading into the Masters.
But in the end, the World No 1 was pushed all the way by Jon Rahm, who flourished on the big stage again.
A former World Amateur No 1 for 60 weeks, Rahm has nonetheless taken to professional golf like a duck to water since turning pro in June of last year. Up to 14th in the OWGR, his second place was his fifth top 5 finish in that time, while he won the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines in January. In nine months, he has won $4.3m on the PGA Tour.
The Spaniard had a total of 34 birdies and an eagle in his seven matches at Austin, crushing Kjeldsen 7&5, Howell III 6&4 and Garcia 6&4.
Rahm drove alongside Johnson, hitting one drive 438 yards in the final, while the rest of his game was faultless for much of the week.
