Gutsy Spieth wins a classic at Birkdale

Jordan Spieth won the 146th Open Championship at Royal Birkdale

For a player that is known as a steady, methodical, almost ‘boring’ golfer by some commentators, Jordan Spieth sure knows how to put on a dramatic finish.

A month after winning the Travelers Championship with a holed bunker shot, Spieth completely squandered his three-shot overnight lead at The Open on Sunday. When he hit a 50-yard slice on the 13th hole, it seemed like an Augusta-style meltdown was in progress.

Barely finding his ball, he declared an unplayable before he took a controversial line-of-sight ruling that took him to the driving range, through equipment vans, through Birkdale’s dunes.

From there, he somehow made just bogey. And then a struggling Spieth just flicked a switch and put in one of the most devastating four-hole spells in major championship history.

Five under for four hole on a tricky Birkdale layout, it included a 40 footer for eagle on 15. A resilient and unfortunate Matt Kuchar was left helpless.

And do it was Spieth’s third major title, and most memorable, at the age of just 23. The legend grows for a player who could eventually prove to be the greatest of his generation.
