The Australian showed why he is world number one with late salvo

Jack Nicklaus won two US Opens at Baltusrol and his 1 iron 238-yard uphill, into-the-wind, approach to 22 feet is commemorated with a plaque on the final hole. He then sank the putt to win the 1967 US Open.

We are not sure if this was on the mind of Jason Day but as he headed up 18, Jimmy Walker’s victory seemed a procession, with a two-shot lead and a birdie putt upcoming on 17. Day knew he had to produce one of the shots of his life and somehow he even outdid the great Nicklaus.

A 258-yard 2 iron never left the flagstick and finished 13 feet from the hole. An astonishing shot from the world number one and he duly dispatched the eagle putt.

Walker would not be flustered and he deservedly closed out the tournament with a birdie on 17 before a par at the last secured a one stroke victory. It was a sweet first major for the American. But let’s not forget Jason Day’s titanic eagle simply because it was that of a loser. He may have finished second but it was also the shot of a champion.
