The American’s unorthodox swing has stood the test of time

Jim Furyk’s swing was once described as ‘like an octopus falling out of a tree’ by commentator David Feherty. You would not teach Jim Furyk’s swing to a beginner, in fact he is perhaps the only player in the world that can swing his way. But a 58 in the Travelers Championship final round is more than ever vindication for his unorthodox technique.

Furyk’s only long-term coach has been his father, Mike, who decided that the swing works for Jim. The results have been incredibly low scores. Furyk’s historic 58 adds to his 59 at Conway Farms on the PGA Tour in 2013. Furyk hit all 18 greens in regulation on Sunday, carding 10 birdies and an eagle in a flawless round.

The American has won a major and 17 times on the PGA Tour but perhaps the greatest testament to Furyk is how his swing has stood the test of time. His 58 comes over 20 years since his first win on the PGA Tour. In that time, he has won $67 million. Not bad for an ‘octopus’ swing, eh?
