The Big Cat is back. Tiger Woods will return to golf this week at the Safeway Open in California to kick off the 2016-17 PGA Tour season. The last time Tiger Woods played competitive golf was all the way back at the Wyndham Championship in August 2015, when he finished a tied for 10th place.
Woods contended for much of the tournament, before a triple-bogey on Sunday ended his chances. As a result, the final round of the Wyndham Championship, one of the smaller events on the PGA Tour, had the best ratings for any non-major event in over two years.
That is the Tiger effect, he captures the public’s attention like no other. While golfing broadcasters can be accused of going overboard with Tiger coverage sometimes, there’s no doubt that he adds a layer of intrigue to proceedings when he tees up. Pairing him with his greatest rival – Phil Mickelson – for his return, as the San Francisco Chronicle has claimed, could make for must-see television.
