“It’s like riding a bike but just a new bike.”
That is how Tiger described his swing this week, and it could also be applied to his attempt to win the Valspar Championship. Just like how you never forget to ride a bike, Tiger is proving that if you are as great as he was at golf, you will never forget what it takes to play good golf. Increasingly, it looks like Woods’ playing troubles in 2014 and 2015 were caused by his back injury. Now, pain-free, we are seeing the genius at work again.
Woods shot a final round of 70 to finish in a tie for second, the American’s comeback continues to progress. Rather than the glimpses of the old Tiger that we saw at previous tournaments, there were sustained passages of play at Innisbrook that really impressed. For example, he had only three bogeys in his last 54 holes on a tough track. There were also some moments of magic such as the chip-in at 9 on Saturday.
On Sunday, it was not quite vintage Woods, he missed quite a few putts, he did not quite get the ball as close to the hole as he might have with his irons. But then, the years came rolling back on the 17th hole, as he holed a sloping 44-foot birdie putt to the biggest roar of the week. It moved him to within one shot of the lead.
We thought, maybe, wait is he actually going to do this? His putt at 18 came up just short, but Tiger had electrified again, and he showed that he has the game to win again on the PGA Tour.
The Arnold Palmer Invitational could not have come at a better time for Woods, he is an eight-time former winner of the event. Given his unmatched course knowledge, the 14-time major champion should catch the attention of many punters this week.
In the end, it was another drought that ended. Paul Casey had had an amazing 22 top-5 finishes on the PGA Tour since he last won on US soil in 2009. Since then, he had won the likes of the BMW PGA Championship and the Irish Open, but no wins anywhere since 2014 was not fitting for a player of his ability. The Englishman had only 21 putts on Sunday as he completed an English double on the main Tours, with Matt Wallace winning on the European Tour.
