Winning takes care of everything

Sergio Garcia returns as Masters champion, which seemed like a crazy thought only six years ago

In 2012, Sergio Garcia was truly at his wit’s end when it came to major championships. Heading into the weekend of the Masters, the Spaniard was only one shot off the lead, and had a late Saturday pairing with Rory McIlroy.

But neither could get anything going on the day, with the duo famously consoling each other with a hug on the 12th hole.

Garcia’s poor round even led the deflated Spaniard to say that he was not good enough to ever win a major.

“I’m not good enough…I don’t have the thing I need to have,” Garcia said. “In 13 years, I’ve come to the conclusion that I need to play for second or third place.”

This seems more ridiculous today, as Sergio heads back to this year’s Masters as the defending champion having won at the 19th time of asking. In the meantime, Garcia has got married, and even named his first child Azalea, after his success at Augusta National.

Regularly spotted with the green jacket on, Garcia has a new found love for the Masters venue, and enters the tournament having had three straight top 10 finishes.

There is no pressure on Garcia to repeat this year, and that should benefit the 38-year-old, whose ball-striking clinic last year was one of the greatest the tournament had ever seen.

Never has the 15th hole been played better than by Sergio on the back 9 Sunday of last year. A massive drive in the perfect position set up for the sweetest 8-iron of his career, which crashed against the flag and led to an eagle 3.

Both Seve Ballesteros and Jose Maria Olazabal won multiple Masters, Garcia certainly has the ability to the do the same.
